“A charity that is very important to me is the Harbor of Refuge, which is a local mission who takes people who have gone through Transformational Living Community (TLC) at Palmer and Hiland Mountain Correctional Center. It gives them a second chance with their kids and provides them with healthy, safe, sober and affordable housing as they return to the community. For this mission I would help get the word out about them and help them find volunteers and mentors to fix the houses up and help the people rejoin the community. If you have ever redone a room in your house you know house expensive that can get, try redoing a whole house. Therefore, I would also like to raise money in my community to help Phil, the person who started the whole mission, with everything that goes into fixing up the house for these people who deserve a second chance.”
“John 6:35 – Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” I am 16 years old and my church is very involved with Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), which is a mobile packing event to be able to feed those who cannot provide themselves with enough nutritious meals. Many of the kids receiving the food used to put rocks in their bodies to trick their stomachs into thinking they were full. The situation that these children are faced with is unacceptable. My heart breaks for each hunger stomach and soul. As someone who has been blessed to have enough food every day of my life, I know I must give back to Jesus’ children somehow and help the ones who can’t help themselves. For this organization, I want to get my school involved when the next packing event comes around, and try to make a field trip out of it. Bringing this to my peer leadership group at school will gain even more support. Also, t shirts can be given out so that people can spread the word. I have been nominated to design a t shirt to sell and receive donations for. There will be faces on the back of the shirt, and to donate money to feed a child, you can sign your name below a face for $10 or so to sponsor that child. I am trying to bring this organization to my school to get the support of those around me, and include other churches to get involved and spread the word. I will also take the time to visit other churches during their services and speak out about FMSC, like a ministry moment. Rallies are an idea that might be included to raise awareness for this event. At a packing event, groups work in two hour shifts at a time. I will try to work during FIVE shifts total (Get it? Five? See what I did there? Normally people only do one or two) to win these backstage passes. I want to be a catalyst of change for Christ! I plan to live out this work whether or not I win this contest, but even you reading this is helping to spread the word. Feeding God’s people with the food he has made is feeding God’s people with his love, which we are called to spread. Matthew 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”
“A charity that is very important to me is the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. For this charity, I would start a campaign in my school and online to help spread the message about this disease. A few years ago, this memory destroying illness took my grandfather’s life. While it only took seconds for him to follow God home, my family and I could see his life drift away little by little over the years. I know that it was all in God’s plan, but I feel like I am called to go out and find a way to call attention to this disease. One of the reasons that I decided to start a campaign is to gain awareness of this disease to the younger generations. I feel like diseases like cancer have thousands of organizations working for the cure, which is amazing, however, Alzheimer’s has very few. I want to be able to start revolutions for this disease and possibly gain enough awareness and donations to end it entirely. Please consider me to win a backstage pass and to help me support this charity.”
