Some have expressed interest in purchasing white flags like what was used in the service Wednesday night. Search online for “blank bandanas” or consider “white cloth napkins” as an alternate. Chris Tomlin’s song White Flag (Passion 2012) was a huge hit – listen here and ask your students about these symbols.

This conference has all the ingredients that are important for a successful and amazing youth conference: There are solid morning seminars that practically help students put feet to their faith. Then there are the over the top activities for every type of kid; including sporting tournaments, bracelet making, spray paint walls, white water rafting, hiking, choir, etc. And to top it off, a world class evening line up. This year our students got to hear from Francis Chan, Lecrae, Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Gungor, and some of our denominational favorites.

The truth is that there are many youth conferences all over the country, and many of them are done with the same level of excellence, balance, and depth as CHIC. But CHIC is not like every other youth conference out there. There is another reason why this conference is so important that my entire yearly calendar submits to it.

Last night, those who gathered for the final mainstage of CHIC2012 raised over $127,555 for the CWR Offering! You might recall from our earlier post on July 17 that ten percent of all sales in the CHICstore along with donations from the online giving option (made available so others, not in Tennessee, could participate) would be added to the offering as well. This is the largest offering collected at CHIC, to date.

May God bless the individuals, their communities, and the world through the ways this money will be used to support Covenant Kids ministries – including the impact the act of giving in such a manner may have on the students, leaders, volunteers, and supporters of CHIC 2012.

The question of the night was “Do you want to be made well?” Rev. Judy Peterson, North Park University’s campus pastor, challenged students to get up and move away from the things that are making them unwell, to surrender them to Christ and start living a “well-er” life.

Moving into a time of worship and communion following this challenge, the crowd joined in the song White Flag, a Passion worship song that has become the anthem of the week. Students gathered with their youth groups to talk about what it is they need to surrender, to pray, and to make commitments to lead a “well-er” life together. Everyone was invited to take a white flag as a symbol of those things they were surrendering to Christ before partaking in communion.

“It was amazing to share in this together,” said Aune Carlson, youth and young adult ministry coordinator for the Evangelical Covenant Church. “To serve communion to friends I have worked alongside in ministry from as far away as Alaska, students from Michigan I have known since they wore diapers, and pastors from everywhere in between – what a privilege, a beautiful expression of the body of Christ.”

As a public confession of our sin and our scabs, each of us covered the palm of one hand in paint and made our mark on a board covered in hundreds of other handprints. We all left our mess on the board and gave it up to God. We all have sin in our lives, but we don’t have to let it define us. We can wash our hands of past sins. We can heal. Our scab will eventually turn to scar — a wound that has healed, but we can still see evidence of it. It’s there as a reminder. It doesn’t define us, it reminds us how far we have come.

As the speaker encouraged, turn your mess into a message, your test into a testimony, and go from being a victim to being victorious in Christ.
